Overview
The Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards recognize extraordinary Albertans whose formal volunteer efforts have truly made a difference in their community, or a volunteer who is breaking barriers to create communities that are diverse and inclusive.
Formal volunteerism includes providing support without pay to:
- charitable or non-profit organizations
- causes
- community development activities
Awards
Up to 9 awards are given annually during a provincial ceremony hosted on or around International Volunteer Day (December 5).
All award recipients receive:
- an engraved award
- a framed certificate on behalf of the Government of Alberta
- a detailed profile on the Stars of Alberta Awards recipients webpage for one year
- acknowledgment through the Government of Alberta’s social media platforms
Categories
The Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards offers multiple categories to represent the diverse volunteerism landscape in Alberta’s communities.
Youth, adult and senior categories
Up to 2 awards may be given in each of these categories:
- youth (up to 24 years old)
- adult (25 to 64 years old)
- senior (65 years old and over)
Breaking barriers category
The breaking barriers category recognizes exceptional volunteers who are working to create communities that are diverse and inclusive. One award may be given in each of these subcategories.
- Addressing racism – address racism or reduce barriers for racialized communities or increase and promote intercultural understanding and trust between communities.
- Advocating for 2SLGBTQQIA+ inclusion – promote 2SLGBTQQIA+ inclusion or address barriers for 2SLGBTQQIA+ people.
- Fighting gender discrimination – reduce barriers for women, girls and gender-diverse people.
Eligibility
Nomination packages are accepted for individuals who are residents of Alberta at the time of their nomination.
Acceptable nomination packages include:
- completed nomination form (online)
- signed consent form
- 1-2 letters of reference
Prepare a nomination package
Step 1: Collect 1-2 letters of reference
Letters of reference from 1-2 representatives of organization(s) named in the nomination form are required as part of the nomination package.
Read the Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards letter of reference outline for required information to be included in each letter of reference.
Letters of reference are attached to the nomination form as supporting documentation.
Step 2: Complete the consent form
Nominations cannot be submitted without permission of the nominee and declaration of the nominator.
Download and complete the Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards consent form and attach it to the nomination form as supporting documentation.
Step 3: Draft your nomination information
Nomination information is submitted in an online form. Partially completed forms cannot be saved and completed later.
Nominators are encouraged to write their nomination information offline, then copy and paste the information into the online form.
Read the Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards nomination form outline for required information to be provided for each nominee.
Only the information requested in the letter of reference outline and nomination form outline will be considered during the adjudication process.
Submit the nomination package
The nomination form and supporting documentation is submitted online. Partially completed nominations cannot be saved and completed later.
