Project information
The redevelopment of the RDRHC will be run as 2 separate projects, each focusing on improvements to the hospital's services.
Project 1: New patient tower and hospital expansion and renovation
This component involves the construction of a new patient tower alongside expansion and renovations to the existing hospital's main building. Key features of this project include:
- adding up to 200 new in-patient beds, raising the total capacity to 570 beds
- six new operating rooms and 2 cardiac catheterization labs
- a new Medical Device Reprocessing Department and central power plant
The renovations will be phased to ensure construction does not affect the delivery of health services.
Project 2: Ambulatory building
A new ambulatory building through a public-private partnership (P3) model. Located adjacent to the surface parkade, the building will include:
- spaces dedicated to addiction and mental health services, dialysis, and minor procedures
- more than 200 underground parking stalls to accommodate the new facility
The Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre Ambulatory Building is in the Request for Proposals stage.
Procurement is underway and a contract with the successful proponent is anticipated to be in place in mid-2025, with construction set to begin that summer.
Funding for this extensive redevelopment, estimated at $1.8 billion, was announced in February 2022, marking it the largest hospital redevelopment project in Alberta's history.
