Overview
The new emergency department at Misericordia Community Hospital officially opened their doors for patients on November 21, 2023. This new facility was designed to provide efficient, compassionate, and patient-centered care for individuals in Edmonton and surrounding areas. With nearly triple the space of the previous department, the new ED accommodates up to 60,000 visits annually, with enhanced privacy, safety, and comfort for patients and their families.
Project information
The new emergency department spans approximately 5,500 square meters (over 59,000 square feet) and features an array of amenities, including:
- 6 ambulance bays: streamlined access for emergency services
- 66 treatment spaces: expanded areas for immediate patient care, including:
- 18 acute care spaces – facilities for critically ill patients, including cardiac monitoring
- 8 mental health spaces – dedicated area to address patients with mental health needs
- 5 isolation rooms – dedicated spaces for patients requiring special precautions
- 2 radiology rooms – advanced imaging capabilities to support diagnostics
- 2 procedure rooms
- 2 resuscitation rooms – for complex and immediate treatment
This $85-million investment from the provincial government reflects a commitment to improving healthcare access and quality in the region. Designed with input from healthcare professionals, the new department provides a seamless transition from triage and registration to intake, assessment, and treatment.
