Additional OLEP funding

Learn more about the 3 streams of additional OLEP funding and funded projects in Alberta.

Provinces and territories have an opportunity each year to apply for additional funding from the federal government. Stakeholders will be contacted when calls for proposals are released and applications can be submitted. Additional funding is allocated through 3 different project streams:

  • Capital projects for minority-language education
  • Complementary projects
  • Francophone and French-language teacher recruitment and retention projects

Community Educational Infrastructure projects for minority-language education

  • École à la Découverte, Community Spaces

    Organization:

    Greater North Central Francophone Education Region

    Description:

    The Government of Canada's contribution to the new À la Découverte school in North Edmonton will support the addition of spaces dedicated to the community pre-school and daycare programs as well as a multi-purpose space for the local Francophone community. This project is funded under the Canada–Alberta Agreement on Minority-Language Education and Second-Language Instruction 2018-2019: Amending Agreement.

  • École Joseph-Moreau, Community Centre

    Organization:

    Greater North Central Francophone Education Region

    Description:

    This multi-year project will fund the renovation of the existing gymnasium from the old Joseph-Moreau school in Edmonton to accommodate a community centre. The community space will require careful demolition work around the structure to preserve the gymnasium while the existing school’s demolition will occur. This project is funded under the Canada–Alberta Agreement on Minority-Language Education and Second-Language Instruction 2018-2019: Amending Agreement.

  • École les Cyprès, Expansion of Les Joyeux Colibris

    Organization:

    Southern Francophone Education Region

    Description:

    This multi-year project will fund the expansion of the new École les Cyprès school in Medicine Hat by adding 202 m² of permanent portable units to accommodate Les Joyeux Colibris pre-school and daycare programs for the local Francophone community. This project is funded under the Canada–Alberta Agreement on Minority-Language Education and Second-Language Instruction 2018-2019: Amending Agreement.

  • École des Quatre-Vents—An Early Childcare Room (Preschool/Daycare) and a Community Multipurpose Room

    Organization:

    The Northwest Francophone Education Region

    Description:

    The Government of Canada's contribution to the new École des Quatre-Vents in Peace River will support the addition of spaces dedicated to the community pre-school and daycare programs as well as a multi-purpose space for the local Francophone community. This project is funded under the Canada–Alberta Agreement on Minority-Language Education and Second-Language Instruction 2020-21 to 2022-23.

  • Addition of Dedicated Community Space for a Francophone Pre-School and Daycare Program for École Francophone de Beaumont

    Organization:

    Description:

    The Government of Canada's contribution to the new École francophone de Beaumont (renamed École Quatre-Saisons) will support the addition of spaces dedicated to the community pre-school and daycare programs as well as a multi-purpose space for the local Francophone community.   • École Le Ruisseau - Community Preschool and Daycare Space in a Francophone Minority Community

    Organization:

    Southern Francophone Education Region

    Description:

    This project aims to expand the École Le Ruisseau replacement school in Brooks by providing new daycare and preschool spaces to accommodate up to 80 children aged between 1 and 5 years old. By increasing the daycare and preschool capacity at École Le Ruisseau, this project will address the current waiting list and contribute to preparing children for the transition to the Francophone school. This project is funded under the Canada-Alberta Agreement on Minority-Language Education and Second-Language Instruction 2020-2021 to 2022-2023.

  • Upgrading Campus Saint-Jean to Foster Transdisciplinarity, Inclusion and Innovation

    Organization:

    Campus Saint-Jean, University of Alberta

    Description:

    This project aims to make improvements to the facilities and equipment at Campus Saint-Jean in order to contribute to its comprehensive pedagogical and digital strategy aimed at reaching a broader audience beyond the limitations of the physical campus. This capital project includes the renewal of critical infrastructure and the repurposing of 376 m2 of the library to convert it into two new classrooms to increase CSJ’s digital capacity in the McMahon pavilion, in Edmonton. This project is funded under the Canada-Alberta Agreement on Minority-Language Education and Second-Language Instruction 2020-2023.

  • Addition of Dedicated Performing Arts Studio and Francophone Pre-School and Daycare Program for École Claudette-et-Denis-Tardif

    Description:

    This project aims to complement the new school with the addition of a performing arts studio, a multi-purpose space and francophone pre-school and daycare facilities that will provide dedicated community spaces by expanding the school footprint. This project is funded under the Canada-Alberta Agreement on Minority-Language Education and Second-Language Instruction 2020-21 to 2022-23.

  • Construction of Pre-School and Daycare Spaces at École Silverado

    Organization:

    Southern Francophone Education Region

    Description:

    This project aims to expand the footprint of the New South Calgary School Complex for the southern francophone communities of the Silverado neighbourhood. The proposed project will provide adequate space needed to host the daycare and pre-school programs at École Silverado school complex. This project is funded under the Canada-Alberta Agreement on Minority-Language Education and Second-Language Instruction 2020-21 to 2022-23.

  • Creating Space Efficiencies at Campus Saint-Jean

    Organization:

    Campus Saint-Jean, University of Alberta

    Description:

    This three-year project aims at reorganizing the footprint and usable space at Campus Saint-Jean for administration, student services and learning, as well as repurposing historical spaces to meet Campus Saint-Jean’s strategic goal of reconciliation and decolonization. Campus Saint-Jean will expand and renovate various spaces within the McMahon, Lacerte and Daridon pavilions in order to better met the needs of students and staff. This project is funded under the Canada-Alberta Agreement on Minority-Language Education and Second-Language Instruction 2023-2024.

  • Addition of community spaces for a pre-school and daycare program at École Gabrielle-Roy and Michaëlle-Jean

    Organization:

    The Greater North Central Francophone Education Region

    Description:

    The objective of this four-year project (2024-2028) is to provide new school and community spaces (childcare and multipurpose spaces) to the Conseil scolaire Centre-Nord on the land currently occupied by École Gabrielle-Roy.

  • Addition of community spaces for a French-language pre-school and daycare program at École Boréale

    Organization:

    The Greater North Central Francophone Education Region

    Description:

    The objective of this four-year project (2024-2028) is to provide new, larger school and community spaces (childcare and multipurpose spaces) to the Conseil scolaire Centre-Nord on the land currently occupied by École Boréale.

  • Renovating Campus Saint-Jean to enhance student learning and life experiences

    Description:

    The objective of this three-year project (2024-2027) is to modernize the student commons area and heating, ventilation and air conditioning in buildings to ensure a quality student experience. This project also aims to increase occupancy, optimize space efficiency, improve the learning and work environment, improve reputation and increase recruitment.

  • Creation of a multi-use performance hall and community stage at Airdrie Secondary School

    Organization:

    Southern Francophone Education Region

    Description:

    The objective of this four-year project (2024-2028) is to build a new French-language secondary school (grade 7 to grade 12) in Airdrie. In addition, the province will use this opportunity to enhance the vitality of the Francophone community by including a dedicated performance venue within the secondary school premises. This dedicated space will be able to accommodate various performing arts activities and serve as a multipurpose performance venue.

    Description:

    This project aims to support Campus Saint-Jean’s postsecondary education programming by strengthening its learning and research environment, increasing student enrollment, and facilitating access to Campus Saint-Jean’s programs for francophone students and French as a second language learners. This project is funded under the Canada–Alberta Agreement on Minority-Language Education and Second-Language Instruction 2018-2019: Amending Agreement.

  • A Peek at the Profession – Enhancement of French Online Courses

    Organization:

    Lakeland College

    Description:

    This project will fund a multimedia component of Lakeland College’s online programming in French, including 10 French-language videos. This will enable Lakeland College to enhance the quality and accessibility of its Early Learning and Child Care Certificate and Educational Assistant Certificate programs in French. This project is funded under the Canada–Alberta Agreement on Minority-Language Education and Second-Language Instruction 2018-2019: Amending Agreement.

  • Support Rural Placements

    Organization:

    Campus Saint-Jean, University of Alberta

    Description:

    This project consists of offering Campus Saint-Jean students enrolled in a Bachelor of Education, a Bachelor of Science in bilingual Nursing, and the Health Care Aides Program the opportunity to respond to the high demand for bilingual teachers and health personnel in rural areas by carrying out practicum placements in rural areas. This project is funded under the Canada–Alberta Agreement on Minority-Language Education and Second-Language Instruction 2018-2019: Amending Agreement.

  • Meeting the Language Needs of Francophone Minority Students – A Tailor-Made Approach for Alberta

    In this project, the four francophone school boards will collaborate to update existing assessment resources for Français and Mathématiques in order to ensure that they are reliable and fair tools, and that they better reflect the current context of teacher in French in a minority setting in Alberta. This project is funded under the Canada–Alberta Agreement on Minority-Language Education and Second-Language Instruction 2019-2020: Amending Agreement.

  • Identity-building facilitators for schools under the FrancoSud regional authority

    Organization:

    Southern Francophone Education Region

    Description:

    With this two-year project (2024-2026), identity-building facilitators will provide a variety of initiatives in French based on the specific needs of schools in Conseil scolaire FrancoSud. By incorporating identity-building facilitators into Conseil scolaire FrancoSud’s schools, this project will foster a sense of belonging within the Francophone communities and increase enrollment numbers in French-language minority schools.

  • Skills initiative for francophone and newcomers at Campus Saint-Jean

    Description:

    This project aims to create a work experience, internship and practicum program at Campus Saint-Jean by partnering with local businesses to provide skills and recognizable experience for Francophones and newcomers, while supporting the Francophone community. This skills initiative program will work with industrial partners to train, through industry driven projects, currently unemployed Francophones and newcomers.

  • Experiential learning through choral singing and musical education at Campus Saint-Jean

  • Homegrown Teachers: Teaching as a Career Pathway Toolkit

    Description:

    This project aims to develop a toolkit to encourage French-speaking junior and senior high school and post-secondary students in the Edmonton area to choose teaching French immersion or French as a second language as a career path. This project is funded under the Canada–Alberta Agreement on Minority-Language Education and Second Official-Language Instruction 2019-20 to 2022-23, which includes a commitment to improving francophone and French-language teacher recruitment and retention.

  • Teacher Recruitment and Retention for Minority-Language Education in Alberta

    This project consists of two components: the consolidation of the resources of the four francophone school boards in order to promote francophone education and recruit teachers, and the creation of work environments that foster cooperation in the profession including a strong mentoring program and effective leadership support that allow beginning teachers to develop a strong sense of personal effectiveness. This project is funded under the Canada-Alberta Agreement on Minority-Language Education and Second-Language Instruction 2020-21 to 2022-23.

  • Teacher Retention and Recruitment in French Immersion and Second-Language Programs

    Description:

    This project focuses on two initiatives: data collection to better understand, monitor and report on the state of teachers’ recruitment and retention in Alberta, and the provision of additional graduate and undergraduate courses in French to future teachers and to current teachers in French immersion and French as a Second Language programs.

  • Development and Adaptation of Re-Entry Resources for French Immersion and FSL Programs

    Organization:

    Edmonton School Division

    Description:

    This project aims to develop and adapt new digital and print teaching and learning resources for teachers and parents to support them in either a face-to-face or synchronous online delivery context. Core subjects for French Immersion Kindergarten to Grade 9 and French as a Second Language (FSL) Grades 4 to 9 resource packages will be classroom validated throughout the various development phases during the 2021-2022 school year and will be made available to all English-speaking school divisions that offer French Immersion and FSL Programs.

  • Provincial staff French-language proficiency framework and assessment model

    Organization:

    Alberta Education

    Description:

    A working group of education partners will collaborate to develop recommendations for a staff language proficiency framework and assessment model that school authorities will be able to use to support teacher professional development and career growth. This project is funded under the Canada-Alberta Agreement on Minority-Language Education and Second-Language Instruction 2023-2024.
