Property tax exemption

Changes to the Municipal Government Act to make affordable housing exempt from property taxes come into effect January 1, 2025. This applies to properties designated as affordable housing through the Alberta Housing Act.

To be designated as affordable housing, accommodations must:

  • be operated under agreement with the federal or provincial government, or a municipality
  • offer below market rent rates per the terms of the agreement with an order of government
  • operate on a not-for-profit basis
  • have a stated mission and mandate to serve Albertans in core housing need or a target population group in Stronger Foundations
