Overview
The Alberta government has delivered the Alberta Crop Reporting Program to clients since 1940. The Alberta Crop Report captures timely information relating to crop production in Alberta during the current crop season. This is done through surveys which collect data on factors including:
- moisture and crop conditions
- progress of seeding and harvesting
- insect and disease situation
- yield potential
- crop quality
This program is done in partnership with Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) and the Alberta Agricultural Fieldmen. The survey data, along with information from other sources, is used to compile the weekly crop report with provincial and regional summaries. Both AFSC and Agriculture and Irrigation will be taking turns writing the weekly Crop Reports, except for the months of July and August, which is bi-weekly.
The crop report is used by the ministry, industry and other stakeholders for various purposes, including drought monitoring and forecasting of production insurance payments.

Crop season review
The annual Alberta Crop Season in Review report presents a review of the crop season and an analysis of crop production statistics for the current year. In addition, a precipitation map for each year’s crop season is attached for reference.
Greenfeed and silage production
Official greenfeed and silage production statistics for Alberta are not available from Statistics Canada or any other source, despite the fact that producers in the province harvest significant acreages of annual crops for greenfeed and silage every year.
To fill this data gap and meet client needs, a greenfeed and silage production survey has been initiated by Agriculture and Irrigation. The survey is conducted annually to develop selected statistics for the province forage industry. The annual Alberta Greenfeed and Silage Production Survey Results includes provincial data and information on greenfeed and silage acreage, yields and production as well as pasture and tame hay growing conditions and yields.
