Family Violence Prevention Month

Details: November is Family Violence Prevention Month (FVPM) in Alberta. It is a time to increase awareness of the warning signs of family violence and the resources and supports available so we can work together to end family violence and build healthier relationships in our communities. You can participate by attending events in your community, including those below, or by sharing information on social media using #WhereToTurn.
Illuminate Challenge
Date: November 1 to 30
Where: Provincewide
Organization: Raisely
Details: The Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation, the REALTORS Community Foundation, the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton, and Stop Abuse in Families are proud to launch Illuminate Challenge, a partnership to mark family violence month. This challenge allows participants to track their steps and other activities throughout the month of November. Participants are also encouraged to raise funds, with all proceeds supporting the important work of the charities.
Shine A Light
Date: November 1 from 6 pm to midnight
Where: Allan and Jean Millar Centre, Whitecourt
Organization: Whitecourt Family Violence Initiative
Details: Residents are asked to keep a light on, hang a glow stick or plug in holiday lights for the duration of this night to show support for family violence. Glow bracelets will be available for pick up at the Allan and Jean Millar Centre to mark the start of Family Violence Prevention Month.
Family Violence Initiative Gala
Date: November 2 at 5 pm
Where: St. Joseph Parish Hall, Whitecourt
Organization: Whitecourt Family Violence Initiative
Details: This event is open to all community members aged 18+ with the mission of creating awareness within the community and to encourage others to shine a light on family violence. There will be a speech on the "Power of Me Too" from Theo Fleury (Former NHL All-Star, Stanley Cup winner and Olympic Gold Medalist) along with a comedy performance from Rory Gardiner who uses life challenges to create content and promote resiliency.
Family Violence Awareness Business Kits
Date: November 7
Where: Whitecourt
Organization: Whitecourt Family Violence Initiative
Details: Family Violence Awareness Business Kits will be distributed within the community of Whitecourt which are intended for client waiting rooms, cashier check out areas, business reception areas and coffee rooms. These kits will have provincial along with local information and resources for family violence.
Diverse Voices Family Violence Conference
Date: November 7 and 8
Where: Fantasyland Hotel, Edmonton
Organization: Diverse Voices
Details: Attend the largest annual family violence conference in Western Canada to learn, meet and mingle with leading thinkers and doers from a variety of perspectives in the field of family violence. Keynotes are Anna Maria Tremonti, Patricia Makokis, Walter S. DeKeseredy and Karen Mason, plus talent from Alberta and North America breaking the mold, like Lana Wells, Deinera Exner-Cortens, and Kiara Mikita.
Momentum Summit

Details: Momentum Summit offers a unique opportunity to connect with and learn from leaders dedicated to promoting gender justice and positive masculinities by engaging men and boys in meaningful conversations and actions where we live, work, play and pray. It has been developed by Next Gen Men as part of Pathways supported by Women and Gender Equality Canada.
Northern Haven’s Annual Open House

Details: Northern Haven Support Society is hosting an open house to recognize Family Violence Prevention Month and profile local initiatives in Slave Lake and surrounding communities. There will be activities followed by a spaghetti dinner fundraiser.
Bullying Awareness Week

Details: Bullying Awareness Week (BAW) is a time to promote awareness of the impacts of bullying and how you can help to prevent it from happening. Advanced Safety Planning on Family Violence

Details: A comprehensive, interactive workshop exploring strategies and tools for service providers supporting those experiencing family violence. Lunch is provided on day one of the in-person event. The introductory fee for this workshop is $65/participant.
Community Empowered
Date: November 20 from 6:30 am to 8:30 pm
Where: Landmark Cinemas 130 Century Crossing, Spruce Grove Organization: Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters
Details: Hosted by the Tri-Region Municipal Collaborative, view screenings of three short films followed by a panel discussion with participants with diverse perspectives and lived-experience. Pop, popcorn and candy to be provided.
Intervening with Perpetrators Who Choose to Use Coercive Control Towards Their Families
Date: November 22 from noon to 1:30 pm

Details: During this webinar, Rhonda Dagg will present on approaches to working with perpetrators of intimate partner violence. Participants will learn to recognize and respond to controlling and manipulative tactics used by perpetrators, along with strategies for engaging with perpetrators. The session will also highlight the importance of maintaining safety when working with participants, addressing the physical and emotional aspects of worker safety and wellbeing.
16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence

Details: The annual international campaign begins on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and goes until December 10, Human Rights Day. This campaign started in 1991 to call out and speak up on gender-based violence, and to renew our commitment to ending violence against women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ individuals. During the 16 days, follow the Association of Alberta Sexual Assault Services on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Threads and X/Twitter and share their social media posts with the hashtags #16DaysofActivism or #16Days.
It Ends With Us – A Movie Screening for Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Organization: Esquao Institute for the Advancement of Aboriginal Women and enCompass Community. Safety. Agency. (formerly Edmonton John Howard Society)
Details: The Esquao Institute partnered with enCompass for a movie screening of It Ends with Us followed by a panel discussion on the realities of family violence in our community. Entrance is free but spaces are limited.
First Responder to Sexual Assault and Abuse Training
Date: December 11 and 12 from 9 am to 5 pm

Organization: Association of Alberta Sexual Assault Services (AASAS)
Details: This 2-day education program is intended to build the capacity of professionals, paraprofessionals, and community members to respond effectively to disclosures of sexual assault, abuse and harassment. Early bird registration and payments are now being accepted.
