Overview
Principles, procedures and appendices are collectively referred to as the guidelines. They describe the relevant royalty legislation (statutes and regulations). They also communicate policy with respect to the application of the legislation.

June 2018 guidelines
The oil sands royalty guidelines dated June 2018 reflect all the amendments to the regulations to date. The guidelines also reflect the department’s policies and procedures as of June 2018.
2009 changes
Effective January 1, 2009, Alberta Energy made significant changes to the Oil Sands Royalty Program and implemented the new:
- Oil Sands Royalty Regulation, 2009 (AR 223/2008)
- Oil Sands Allowed Cost (Ministerial) Regulation (AR 231/2008)
- Bitumen Valuation Methodology (Ministerial) Regulation (AR 232/2008)
The Oil Sands Royalty Guidelines and Appendix have been updated to reflect these changes. They refer to the relevant legislation (statutes and regulations) as outlined in Information Bulletin 2018-04.
Earlier guidelines
These oil sands royalty guidelines were effective prior to January 1, 2009. See:

Many of the policies, practices and reporting remain the same under the Oil Sands Royalty Regulation, 1997 (AR 185/97).
The business rules and reporting requirements are still required under the Royalty Guidelines and Appendix, which were in effect prior to December 31, 2008.
