Overview
Health evidence reviews help health system planners, decision-makers and clinicians meet the needs of Albertans and foster a sustainable health care system. Reviews focus on optimizing health care delivery from a system-wide perspective to improve health outcomes and deliver more effective services.
Improving health outcomes and service delivery
Reviews provide critically appraised evidence and analysis to advance Alberta’s health care priorities. They can be focused on a specific disease or condition, a care pathway, the integration of new procedures and technologies, or a specific part of the delivery system.
A review with the potential for high impact typically has the following characteristics:
- aligns with Alberta’s priorities
- informs a policy or clinical decision point with a clear objective
- identifies potential implementation levers
- engages operational, clinical, and financial health system leaders champion change
Reviews can be customized to provide a range of evidence and information, including:
- effectiveness and safety of a care pathway or model of care
- cost-effectiveness
- economic analyses
- real-world evidence
- feasibility of implementation
- environmental scans
- policy, ethical, social, and legal implications
Alberta Health works with the following internationally recognized health evidence experts to conduct reviews in an arms-length capacity:
- Institute of Health Economics
- University of Alberta, Health Technology and Policy Unit
- University of Calgary, Health Technology Assessment Unit
- Canada’s Drug Agency
The views presented in the reports are solely those of the partner organizations that produce the reports and do not represent the policies or position of the Alberta government or any other agency. Updates are provided when available.

The Health Evidence and Policy unit manages the production of Alberta Health Evidence Reviews. The unit also supports the Alberta Advisory Committee on Health Technologies and works with partners across the health care system to build their capacity to produce and use evidence in decision-making.
