Overview
We have gathered input on restarting pumping water into Gull Lake from the Blindman River. Pumping has been suspended since 2018 to prevent Prussian carp, an invasive fish species, from entering Gull Lake.
Gull Lake is experiencing low water levels, which can impact wildlife, recreation, tourism and investment in the area. To help stabilize water levels, we are taking steps to potentially install a pressurized filtration system that could allow water to be pumped from the river into the lake in a way that keeps out Prussian carp and their eggs.
To install a filtration system and resume pumping an amendment to the water license is required. Government sought feedback before proceeding.
Government will not pump from the Blindman River during low-flow periods in the river.

Open houses
Albertans were able to attend open house in-person meetings in Parkland Beach on August 12, Gull Lake on August 13 and online on August 20 to learn more about the project.
- Read the Gull Lake stabilization project open house handout distributed at Parkland Beach and Gull Lake.
- Watch the recorded August 20 virtual open house webinar.
Input received
Online survey
Albertans were given until August 30, 2024, to provide input on the Gull Lake stabilization project. Input received from open houses as well as the survey data are now being reviewed by Agriculture and Irrigation staff.
Outcomes
Your input will help inform an application for an amendment to the current licence under the Water Act that would allow government to install a pressurized filtration system and restart pumping when water level is adequate.
