General Educational Development

The Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) replaces the General Educational Development (GED) in Alberta.

The GED® is no longer available in Canada effective May 3, 2024. Learn more about its replacement, the Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC).

Replacing the GED in Alberta

Together with national partners, Alberta led the development of a high-quality, made-in-Canada education credential that meets assessment industry standards as a replacement for the GED®. This replacement credential is called the Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC).

In May 2024, the CAEC replaces the GED® in Alberta.

Visit the CAEC page for more information about how you can earn your CAEC.

For GED holders

If you previously earned your GED®, you can continue to use your GED® as an education credential, even after the CAEC is introduced. The GED® will continue to be recognized as a valid credential.

For GED test-takers

Recognizing previous GED tests

Test-takers who passed any 2002 Canadian Test Series GED® tests can apply to have the results count towards CAEC tests in the same subjects for up to 3 years, until May 2027. Learn more about how to apply.

Request your marks

You can view or request your GED marks in perpetuity through myPass, a secure self-service website for students to access their education information.

Receiving your credential

If you wrote and passed all 5 GED® tests before the May 3, 2024 deadline (when the GED® ended in Canada), Alberta Education will mail you a High School Equivalency Diploma.

You will receive the diploma in about 4 to 6 weeks of writing your final passing test. These timelines are an estimation – you may experience longer than normal wait times as GED® activities wrap-up across Canada.
