The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (the FOIP Act) aims to strike a balance between the public’s right to know and an individual’s right to privacy, as these rights relate to information held by public-sector bodies in Alberta.

In spring 2025, the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act will be replaced by the Protection of Privacy Act and the Access to Information Act. Both Acts received royal assent on December 5, 2024, to support the modernization and streamlining of Alberta’s privacy and access laws.
