Caribou conservation agreement engagement

Canada-Alberta Section 11 conservation agreement for woodland caribou.

Overview

The Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada have negotiated a caribou conservation agreement under Section 11 of the federal Species at Risk Act. Alberta is committed to achieving and maintaining naturally self-sustaining woodland caribou populations, and this agreement will help to accomplish that outcome, while maintaining jobs, building local economies and supporting strong communities.

Alberta Environment and Parks received feedback on the draft agreement through a survey available from August 8 to October 6, 2019. The feedback provided by Albertans was considered by the provincial government during its negotiations with the Government of Canada.

Outcomes

The Government of Alberta has signed an agreement with the Government of Canada. This agreement sets out how the two governments will work to stabilize and recover woodland caribou populations in Alberta.
