Overview
A waste management facility is defined by the type of waste that is accepted, and the processes used to handle and treat the accepted wastes.
The Alberta government has developed legislation and guidance documents for several common waste management facility types including:
- Composting facilities
- Hazardous facilities
- Hydrovac facilities
- Landfills
- Transfer stations
- Waste to energy facilities
Setbacks and financial security
All waste management facilities must meet requirements under the Activities Designation Regulation as well as setback distances under the Subdivision and Development Regulation. Waste facilities that need to be registered or approved are also required to post financial security as required by the Waste Control Regulation.
Online waste measurement system
The online waste measurement does not replace the annual reporting obligations that are listed in waste management facility approvals. The online waste measurement system provides a consistent format to allow the information to be consolidated and used for policy development.
2019 Data Submission Update
The requirements for submission remain the same. However, the method of data submission is changing from the online system (ReTrac) to the Waste Measurement System Materials Management Report Form which is to be submitted via email to: [email protected].
