Transportation regulation engagement

Gathered input to improve the way Alberta regulates trucking, bus and service companies.

Overview

We are reviewing commercial transportation regulations to find ways to streamline the rules to transport people, goods and services efficiently, while improving safety.

The regulation of trucking, bus and service companies is a shared responsibility between the federal, provincial and territorial governments. While the majority of provinces and territories have adopted federal regulations, Alberta and Saskatchewan have a unique commercial transportation regulatory framework. The review will help us understand how the regulatory system in Alberta affects different industries and carriers.

We asked for feedback on:

  • Alberta’s two-tier hours of service system
  • the adoption of Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs)
  • implementation of National Safety Code (NSC) Standards
  • vehicle weights and dimensions
  • Alberta’s overall regulatory environment

The feedback will help identify where we can streamline or harmonize rules with other jurisdictions to strengthen our system and uphold safety, while improving transport and trade and saving commercial carriers time and money.

All commercial transportation companies in Alberta were contacted directly by email to provide their perspective.

Outcomes

Feedback gathered will be used to develop a broad range of options to improve transportation regulation efficiency and safety.
