Caseflow conference
This free service – known as Caseflow Conference – is for parents or guardians who are in the midst of a dispute. It is a type of dispute resolution as an alternative to court (ADR).
At a Caseflow Conference meeting, a caseflow coordinator:
- is a neutral third party (a person who does not take sides)
- works with both sides to talk to each other about their dispute
- tries to help both sides find an agreement so they do not need to go to court
Caseflow coordinators cannot give legal advice.
Caseflow Conference may be required if you are:
- a self-represented litigant – someone who does not have a lawyer – in Calgary, Edmonton or Grande Prairie
- applying for parenting, guardianship or contact access to a child
Otherwise, you can ask for this service if you:
- have a lawyer
- are applying for child support
- are required to attend a dispute resolution program and a Caseflow Conference meeting would be the best fit for you
Full or partial agreements
If you and the other party reach a full or partial agreement at a Caseflow Conference meeting:
- The terms of the agreement – things both sides agreed about – will be drafted for review by the court.
- The court may grant the terms of the agreement as a Consent Order.
A Consent Order can be prepared for:
- child support
- parenting
- contact with a child
- guardianship
