Overview
We are gathering feedback from industry associations and operators and non-governmental organizations to inform a review of the design and relevance of Alberta’s solution gas flaring limit. Feedback will include perspectives of the challenges and opportunities surrounding the implementation of policy instruments and supporting tools in the current context.
We are committed to ensuring our approach to managing emissions from solution gas flaring sets international best practices, including the introduction of the solution gas flaring limit in 2002. Alberta is the only province in Canada to currently have such a limit.
The current solution gas flaring limit remains in place.
Get informed
In 2023, Alberta’s solution gas flaring limit was exceeded for the first time. In consideration of the exceedance, Alberta’s increasing oil production, and the global focus on routine flaring elimination and methane emissions mitigation, we are conducting a review of the solution gas flaring limit policy.
The engagement focuses on:
- solution gas flaring limit policy approach and design
- infrastructure, costs and supports
- definitions and reporting of flaring volumes
Stakeholder engagement
Industry and non-governmental organizations have been invited to share their views regarding the solution gas flaring limit and any related policy instruments and supporting tools through a webinar, stakeholder specific meetings and an online feedback form. Their final feedback is required by November 13, 2024.
The Indian Resource Council of Canada has also been invited to participate in this engagement. Indigenous perspectives will be captured though the council’s participation.
Outcomes
Stakeholder feedback along with the Alberta government direction will inform policy tools and approaches related to the review and relevancy of Alberta’s solution gas flaring limit.
