Overview
We gathered feedback from industry associations and operators and airshed organizations to inform a review of the design and relevance of Alberta’s solution gas flaring limit. Feedback included perspectives of the challenges and opportunities surrounding the implementation of policy instruments and supporting tools in the current context.
We are committed to ensuring our approach to managing emissions from solution gas flaring sets international best practices, including the introduction of the solution gas flaring limit in 2002. Alberta is the only province in Canada to currently have such a limit.
The current solution gas flaring limit remains in place.
Get informed
In 2023, Alberta’s solution gas flaring limit was exceeded for the first time. In consideration of the exceedance, Alberta’s increasing oil production, and the global focus on routine flaring elimination and methane emissions mitigation, we are conducting a review of the solution gas flaring limit policy.
The engagement focuses on:
- solution gas flaring limit policy approach and design
- infrastructure, costs and supports
- definitions and reporting of flaring volumes
Input received
Industry and airshed organizations shared their views regarding the solution gas flaring limit policy, instruments and supporting tools through participation in a webinar, stakeholder specific meetings and completion of an online feedback form between October 9 and November 13, 2024. Thank you to all those who provided feedback.
Outcomes
Stakeholder feedback along with the Alberta government direction will inform policy tools and approaches related to the review and relevancy of Alberta’s solution gas flaring limit.
