Who is eligible
The seniors’ discount is available to individuals aged 65 and over who reside in Alberta. To receive a discount on eligible services, you must be 65 or older on the date of purchase.
- The seniors’ discount is available to seniors, and agents acting on behalf of a senior for motor vehicles and vital statistics services. The seniors’ discount is available to seniors who are part of a group accessing a service (for example: joint vehicle registration).
How the discount will be processed
The discount will be applied to eligible services at point of sale at any Alberta registry agent office.
Seniors purchasing personal registry services online through MyAlberta eServices will also be able to access the discount, but not all services eligible for the discount are available online.
- For example: first-time driver’s licence or ID card applications, first-time vehicle registration or vehicle transfers, address changes, or driver’s licence reclassifications must be processed in person at a registry agent.
Reimbursement for Driver’s Medical Examinations
Seniors can receive 25% back on the cost of a driver's medical examination at any Alberta registry in a few simple steps.
- Complete the exam at your physician’s office and get a receipt that includes your name, service provided, date and physician’s details (clinic, address, phone number) and the amount paid for the service.
- Bring the receipt to your local registry office.
- Upon receiving the receipt, a registry agent will verify eligibility, calculate the 25% discount, and issue a credit.
- The credit will be processed and you will be reimbursed the 25% discount in the form of a government-issued cheque which will be mailed to the address on your motor vehicles file within 10 business days.
The discount applies to driver’s medical examinations completed on or after April 1, 2024, as long as a valid physician issued receipt is provided.
Restrictions
- The seniors’ discount does not apply to corporate and business services, personal property services, commercial vehicle registrations or optional products such as personalized and specialty licence plates.
- Seniors’ discounts will not be applied to services that are tied to punitive measures, or to enforcing traffic safety (for example: fines, ignition interlock and restricted licence applications).
