“We are pleased that the Government of Canada has approved the City of Calgary’s revised business case for the Green Line LRT project that meets the provincial requirements of connecting to the Red and Blue Lines downtown, the new event centre, and as far south to Shepard. This approval ensures the matching federal funding commitment of $1.53 billion for this critical project and that construction can finally begin after a decade of delay since 2015.
“The new Green Line alignment saves more than a billion dollars in tunnelling costs with an elevated alignment through downtown and enables the city to add five more stations, increase the length by 76 per cent, and serve 60 per cent more commuters.
“The City of Calgary is responsible for delivering the project. Tenders for construction will go out in spring 2025 with the focus to utilize local construction companies.
“At the same time, the City of Calgary will also begin work immediately on the planning and design development for the downtown segment. This work will be based on the Government of Alberta’s plan and alignment, using 10 Avenue and 2 Street SW. The design is expected to be completed by 2026, leading to construction on the downtown segment beginning in 2027.
“We are pleased to work in collaboration with the City of Calgary in helping to bring forward a project that is in the best interest of Calgary commuters and Alberta taxpayers.”
