In November 2023, Alberta’s government announced plans to refocus the health care system to strengthen services, empower local decision-making, enhance support for front-line workers and improve health outcomes for all Albertans. Throughout this process, the government has held in-person public sessions and used online tools to help gather feedback and input on the new system from Albertans and health care providers.
Alberta’s government is committed to using the insights and experiences of Albertans to shape the new system, and will be holding a second round of engagement, including in-person public sessions, beginning Jan. 21. In addition to updating Albertans on the latest refocusing work and what it means for them, these sessions will gather perspectives on access to health care and the current experiences of the health care workforce, and identify opportunities to improve local decision-making.
“From the very start, we have been committed to building a health care system that works for every Albertan. By continuing the conversation, we are ensuring that their experiences, perspectives and expertise are reflected in our decision-making.”
Starting this month, all Albertans are invited to participate in one of the in-person engagement sessions being held across the province. The schedule can be found online and registration for the sessions is now open on alberta.ca.
The findings from the first sessions, summarized in the What We Heard report, have helped guide the design and implementation of the refocused health care system. Findings from the second round of engagements will further inform this work.
Since the first round of engagements, Alberta’s government has launched the provincial health agencies Recovery Alberta and Primary Care Alberta, announced Acute Care Alberta, implemented legislative amendments to support the transition to the new system and continues work to establish an assisted living provincial health agency and regional advisory councils.
Albertans interested in keeping up to date on health care system refocusing and engagement opportunities can also sign up for an e-newsletter.
