In Alberta, pesticides must be applied in a safe and effective manner that prevents negative impacts to human health and the environment.
On August 30, 2022, SCAT applied Temprid SC, a commercial Schedule 2 Pesticide for ants, inside Lakeland College’s Emergency Training Centre Building in Vermilion without following the requirements on the label. While no one was injured, requirements were not followed. These included making sure no occupants were present during application, restricting re-entry to the building for six hours, properly ventilating the treated areas, providing information sheets to occupants and ensuring the correct dilution of the pesticide.
SCAT pleaded guilty to one count under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act. All remaining charges were withdrawn.
SCAT was sentenced to a $6,000 penalty inclusive of the victim surcharge.
