At 2:30 p.m. that day, CPS received a 911 call from a Bowness liquor store employee who said that a man had stolen a bottle of vodka and smashed through a door with a hammer to escape. She said that the man was in a nearby park.
At 2:35 p.m., two uniformed officers arrived at the park and saw a man matching the description provided. Civilians in the area told the officers that the man had a knife.
The officers then approached the man, who stood up while holding the knife. The officers told the man that he was under arrest, and to drop the knife. The man did not drop the knife, and instead walked toward the officers.
At 2:36 p.m., one of the officers fired her handgun at the man twice. He was struck in the leg once and fell to the ground. The officers requested emergency medical services (EMS).
At 2:38 p.m., the two initial officers and additional officers began to assess and provide first aid to the man. EMS arrived and assumed care at 2:42 p.m. They then transported the man to a hospital with non-life -threatening injuries.
The officers had body worn cameras and cameras on their police vehicle that captured the incident.
ASIRT’s investigation will examine the use of force. No additional information will be released.
As part of its ongoing investigation, ASIRT is continuing efforts to identify people who may have witnessed aspects of the confrontation between the man and police, including a female who was in the park at the time that police arrived. ASIRT is asking anyone who may have been in the area and may have witnessed these events and/or may have video to contact investigators at 403-592-4306.
On Aug. 14, 2024, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) was directed to investigate an Edmonton Police Service (EPS) officer-involved shooting causing death that occurred earlier that day.
At 6:00 a.m. that day uniformed officers with EPS, along officers with the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT), Internet Child Exploitation Unit, attended a residence in Southeast Edmonton to serve a search warrant on the occupant, an adult male. Officers knocked on the door and were let in by the male.
While speaking with the male, a knife was produced and officers discharged their firearms. The resident was hit by gunfire and one officer with EPS suffered a stab wound. EMS attended but the male was declared deceased in the residence. A knife was later recovered from the scene.
ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
