Canada’s triathlon city will once again play host to the Americas Triathlon Cup, welcoming elite triathletes from around the world to Edmonton for the two-day event. The 2024 Americas Triathlon Cup is Alberta’s 22nd international triathlon, further solidifying Alberta’s reputation as a premier destination for major sporting events.

Edmonton has a solid reputation around the world as Canada’s triathlon city and has produced more Olympic triathletes than any other city in Canada. Included among the 250 Alberta athletes competing in the Americas Triathlon Cup are former Alberta Games athletes Kahlen Anderson, Ashton Thomson, Declan McCallion and Chris Gregor.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Americas Triathlon Cup back to Edmonton for the second year in a row. Hosting this event gives Albertans the chance to see the best from around the world compete in their own backyard and inspires the next generation of triathletes to chase their dream, all while showing off Edmonton’s iconic river valley.”

Joseph Schow, Minister of Tourism and Sport

The Americas Triathlon Cup promises a test of endurance, strategy and skill. The course kicks off with a mass-start swim in the North Saskatchewan River, followed by two cycling loops that cross the Walterdale Bridge and traverse River Valley Road before climbing up Groat Road. The final leg of the race takes athletes along the winding paths that trace the river’s edge: a scenic and demanding run to the finish.

The event is expected to attract hundreds of spectators and inject over $1 million into Edmonton’s economy as visitors book accommodations, eat at restaurants, and shop at local businesses. Alberta’s government has provided $25,000 for the planning, staging and delivery of the competition.

“Do North Events has been delivering major international triathlons in our city for over 20 years. The Americas Triathlon Cup will showcase elite athletes racing on the same day as junior and community athletes, creating an exciting and inviting atmosphere for all. Alberta’s government continues to be a vital funding partner — we couldn’t have done it without their support.”

Stephen Bourdeau, ceo, Do North Events

Alberta’s capital has played host to several significant triathlon events over the years, including most recently the World Triathlon Championship Finals in 2021 and the 2023 Americas Triathlon Cup, earning its place as a featured destination on the triathlon circuit.
