The Lviv region is home to the city of Lviv, one of the most important centres of business and culture in western Ukraine. The Lviv region is also rich in natural resources, including oil, gas, sulphur, potash and salt.

Recognizing the longstanding friendship and cultural bond between the Lviv region in Ukraine and the province of Alberta, this MOU refreshes the partnership reflected in previous agreements signed in 2005 and 2017.

This MOU identifies many potential areas of collaboration, including energy, agriculture, health, economic development, humanitarian aid, arts and culture, justice, governance and technology.

“Ukraine and Alberta have incredibly strong ties. Our histories are deeply intertwined and we are proud of this connection. Renewing Alberta’s MOU with the Lviv region is one more way Alberta remains committed to supporting the people of Ukraine.”

Danielle Smith, Premier

Officials from both jurisdictions will continue to exchange knowledge and facilitate direct contacts and lines of cooperation.

Partnership in Lviv’s energy sector could include the exploration and production of hydrocarbons, renewable energy, electricity and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

This MOU will be in effect for five years. It does not create any legally binding obligations. The agreement reflects Alberta’s ongoing commitment to support Ukraine, now and into the future.
