“Today, on Holodomor Memorial Day we remember the lives that were tragically cut short under the brutal, authoritarian, communist regime in the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

“From 1932-33, Joseph Stalin inflicted one of the most brutal crimes in history on the people of Ukraine, in the form of a genocidal mass starvation. Forced collectivization and the seizure of farmer’s crops led to millions of deaths from hunger and disease, the destruction of families and communities, and irreparable damage to the rich Ukrainian culture.

“In light of Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine, let us join together as Albertans to reflect on our shared history with the Ukrainian people and express solidarity with them during this difficult time.”
