“As Minister of Environment and Parks and an avid angler, I appreciate the incredible ice fishing we enjoy throughout the winter. It is a great opportunity to spend time outdoors with friends and family and create long-lasting memories.
“February 19-21 is Family Fishing Weekend in Alberta, and it is the perfect opportunity to give fishing a try for the first time or to return to this beloved pastime. During this weekend, an Alberta sportfishing licence is not required to fish in the province.
“Maintaining sustainable fish populations is a key priority for the Alberta government. Alberta Environment and Parks has partnered to launch the Native Trout Collaborative, a new interactive website to raise awareness about Alberta’s native trout and learn more about their habitats in the Eastern Slopes of the Rocky Mountains, the threats they are currently facing and actions you can take to help.
“In addition to encouraging us to enjoy the outdoors, Family Fishing Weekend is also an opportunity to learn more about responsible angling, from proper fish handling techniques, to ice safety, to the protection of endangered fish species.
“A good place to start planning your next fishing trip is MyWildAlberta.ca, where you will have access to everything you need to plan in a safe and responsible way. My Wild Alberta includes a list of stocked water bodies, advice on fish handling techniques, ice safety tips and many more useful resources.
“Alberta’s sportfishing regulations are available online in a map format, making it easier for anglers to locate the waterbody they plan to visit and learn the regulations before fishing. Please remember that fishing without a licence does not apply to national parks, Alberta’s sport fishing regulations will still apply.
“I encourage you to find some time this Family Fishing Weekend to head outside, enjoy another fishing adventure or give fishing a try for the very first time. Good luck, and I hope you reel in a big one.”
