Overview
In the summer of 2020, we reviewed the Radiation Protection Act to update radiation protection laws and reduce confusion for employers and workers in affected industries.
The act protects workers who may be exposed to sources of radiation while working with certain types of radiation-emitting equipment on the job. It had not been significantly updated since 1985 and no longer aligned with other occupational health and safety (OHS) laws.
We gathered feedback on:
- aligning radiation requirements with OHS legislation
- improving the radiation protection program
- fee schedules and approval processes for inspection agencies

Outcomes
Bill 47, the Ensuring Safety and Cutting Red Tape Act, 2020 was introduced on November 5, 2020 to amend the Radiation Protection Act.
If passed, amendments will move the Radiation Protection Act and its regulations into the Occupational Health and Safety Act to align radiation laws with other workplace health and safety laws. This move improves processes and provides clarity for employers and workers.
