Major construction projects

Introduction

Major transportation projects come from the Provincial Construction Program, which is released as part of the Government of Alberta’s annual budget. The plan includes:

• major capital projects scheduled over the next 3 years
• capital maintenance and renewal (bridge construction and highway rehabilitation) projects scheduled over the next 3 years
• water management infrastructure projects scheduled over the next 3 years
• slide repair projects scheduled over the next year

Project funding

With approximately 64,000 lane km of roads and more than 4,800 bridges and interchanges, Alberta has an extensive highway network that requires significant investment to maintain and rehabilitate.

In Budget 2024, Alberta’s government committed more than $2.2 billion over 3 years for roads and bridges, including:

• $1.9 billion in Capital Investment in roads and bridges, which includes planning, design and construction of highways and major bridge construction
• $311.8 million in water management and flood mitigation

In addition to funding provided through the Capital Plan, Alberta’s Financing Alberta’s Strategic Transportation Act, which came into effect in 2020, allows government to collect tolls to finance the construction of new or expanded highway infrastructure projects.

The use of user fees may accelerate capital spending in areas that support economic growth and trade.

This section provides updates to ongoing construction and transportation projects within Alberta’s larger cities. Major capital projects also include water projects such as McGregor Reservoir and Springbank Off-stream Reservoir.
