Albertans shared feedback on OHS legislation to ensure it meets the needs of workers and employers.

Overview

The Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act helps keep Alberta workplaces safe and workers healthy by preventing work-related injuries, illnesses and fatalities.

In the summer of 2020, we heard feedback from Albertans on ways to keep workers protected while reducing administrative burdens for businesses and employers.

Topics reviewed included how the OHS legislative framework can:

  • strengthen the Internal Responsibility System
  • enable innovation
  • clarify accountabilities

Review of OHS legislation – what we heard provides a summary of what was heard during the engagement. Thank you for your input.

Outcomes

Bill 47, the Ensuring Safety and Cutting Red Tape Act, 2020 was introduced on November 5, 2020 to amend the OHS Act. If passed, amendments will improve health and safety in the workplace by simplifying rules and removing unnecessary barriers, making the process easier for employers and workers.
