Overview
These free workshops are open to all library board members and library managers and are designed to help them support effective public library service in their communities. Participants will learn about:
- the Libraries Act and Libraries Regulation
- the structure of public library service in Alberta, including the Alberta Public Library Network
- library board roles and responsibilities
- governance tools, including Plan of Service, policies and budget
- library board member roles and responsibilities
- library board funding and finances, and
- relationships with other library stakeholders, and board-staff relationships

We are pleased to announce 3 fall in-person Board Basics Workshop dates:
- Medicine Hat: Saturday, October 19, 2024 at the Medicine Hat Public Library, 414 First Street SE, Medicine Hat, AB. Register online for Medicine Hat by Wednesday, October 16.
- Raymond: Saturday, October 26, 2024 at the Raymond Public Library, 15 Broadway S, Raymond, AB. Register online for Raymond by Wednesday, October 23.
- Hinton: Saturday, November 2, 2024 at the Hinton Municipal Library, 803 Switzer Drive, Hinton, AB. Register online for Hinton by Wednesday, October 30.
The workshops will run from 9 am to 4 pm.
Workshop fees and materials
There is no fee to attend the workshop. Meals (including lunch the day of the workshop), travel, and any required accommodation will be the participant’s responsibility.
Participants will receive a handbook and copies of the Libraries Act and Libraries Regulation.
Emergency cancellations
If there is an emergency cancellation, we may contact you using the email you used to register for the workshop.
When possible, we will send cancellation notices by email the day before the scheduled workshop.
