Overview

This project will twin Highway 11 (David Thompson Highway) between Rocky Mountain House and Sylvan Lake. The David Thompson Highway leads to some of the most breathtaking scenery in Canada and is a popular route for the tourism industry. Twinning this highway will improve access for Albertans and visitors alike.

Project details

The project will be completed in 4 sections, which are in various stages of development.

  • Project A

    The project includes Highway 11 twinning from the southern boundary of the Town of Rocky Mountain House to 1 km east of Highway 22. Aecom was the successful consultant for this project.

    Preliminary design began in early 2022.

    Right-of-way purchase, utility coordination and any required environmental studies began in summer 2022 and are ongoing.

    The tender is anticipated to be awarded in fall 2025 with construction starting in 2026.

  • Project B

    This project will include Highway 11 twinning from Highway 22 to Township Road 390.

    In 2021, CIMA+ began with a functional planning study that was completed in fall 2023.

  • Project C

    This project includes Highway 11 twinning from 1 km west of Township Road 390 near the hamlet of Benalto to 2 km west of Highway 781 (to tie in with Project D).

    WSP was the successful consultant. Preliminary design began in early 2022. The project will include intersection improvements and reductions in access points where possible.

    Construction began in spring 2023 and was completed in fall 2023.

  • Project D

    This project includes Highway 11 twinning from 2 km west of Highway 781 to 1 km east of Highway 20. Additional improvements will include a 2-lane roundabout at the intersections of Highway 11 and Highway 781 (50 Street) and at Highway 11 and Range Road 15 (60 Street).

    McElhanney Ltd. was the successful consultant. The project was tendered in spring 2022 and Central City Asphalt Ltd was the successful contractor.

    This project is now complete.

  • 2021
    • Design, right-of-way purchase and utility coordination for Projects A, C and D
    • Preliminary planning and public consultation on Project B
  • 2022
    • Construction began on Project D in the spring and was completed in the fall
  • 2023
    • Completion of planning study on Project B
    • Construction on Project C started and completed
  • 2024
    • Design, right-of-way purchase and utility coordination begin for Project B
  • 2025
    • Tender anticipated to be awarded for Project A
  • 2026
    • Construction begins on Project A

Benefits

The twinning of Highway 11 between Rocky Mountain House and Sylvan Lake will positively impact many communities along the highway corridor. The David Thompson Highway is popular among recreation users, industry and other exploring the west county.

Twinning the highway will make travel in this region safer and more efficient while also supporting tourism, and industry supply chains.
