Overview
Agreements provide a framework for continued collaboration between the provincial government and First Nations in Alberta. They support meaningful discussion, information sharing, and the exploration of issues of mutual concern.
Stoney Nakoda-Tsuut’ina Tribal Council
The Protocol Agreement between the Government of Alberta and the Stoney Nakoda-Tsuut’ina Tribal Council for Discussions on Matters of Mutual Concern was signed in October 2020 by the Premier, the Minister of Indigenous Relations and Chiefs of the Stoney Nakoda-Tsuut’ina Tribal Council.
The agreement commits both parties to engage in mutual government-to-government discussions on these topics:
- health
- economic growth
- education
- family services and housing
Blackfoot Confederacy
The Protocol between the Government of Alberta and the Blackfoot Confederacy for Discussions on Matters of Mutual Concern was signed in September 2019 by the Premier, the Minister of Indigenous Relations and Chiefs of the Blackfoot Confederacy. This renews the government-to-government relationship signed in 2017.
The agreement sets out ways the Blackfoot Confederacy Chiefs and the provincial government will work together to address topics such as:
- social
- economic development and employment
- environment and lands
- United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and Truth and Reconciliation Commission
- political and legal
- culture and language
Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations
The Relationship Agreement between the Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations and the Government of Alberta was signed in July 2022 by the Premier, the Minister of Indigenous Relations and the Grand Chief of the Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations. The agreement formalizes a government-to-government relationship based on collaboration, commitment and cooperation.
The agreement sets out ways the Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations and the provincial government will work together on the following areas of interest:
- lands and resources
- health care
- mental health, addictions and the opioid crisis
- education
- justice and policing
- child and family services
- economic development and urban reserve
- culture and tourism
- reconciliation
- emergency management
Agreement activity
The 3 agreements will remain in place for as long as each party wants to keep them active. As per each agreement, meetings will continue to occur:
- monthly between designated senior officials from both parties to create work plans, accomplish deliverables and draft annual reports
- regularly between designated Chiefs and Ministers to approve work plans
- annually between the Premier of Alberta, lead Ministers, Chiefs and designated senior officials to discuss annual reports
