Webinars offer interactive information on Alberta employment standards rules and responsibilities.

  • Register for a webinar to learn more about Employment Standards rules and responsibilities.
  • Webinars are free and can be accessed from the comfort of your home or office.
  • Webinars include the opportunity to ask questions about Employment Standards.
  • You need to sign up in advance to reserve your seat in a webinar.
  • Recordings of previously held webinars will also be available for on-demand access.
  • It's recommended that you do not use Internet Explorer when participating in a webinar. Recommended browsers include Chrome and Firefox.

Alberta Employment Standards General Overview – posted on October 21, 2024

This session provides a general overview of Employment Standards legislation. Employment Standards legislation outlines the minimum standards that must be met in a workplace and establishes a framework for how these rules can be administered and enforced. Exemptions are noted. Topics covered include: wages, deductions, overtime, general holiday pay, vacation pay, temporary layoffs, job-protected leaves, and termination notice and pay.

Minimum Wage - What are Wages? – posted on July 9, 2024

Learn about what is included in the calculation of wages. Wages exclude overtime, vacation pay, holiday pay, gifts, bonus, tips and expenses. Employees are entitled to at least three hours at the minimum wage for shifts under three hours in length but there can be exceptions. Additionally, find out how employees are paid for meetings or training outside of regular work times and under what circumstances travel time is considered work time.

Payment of Earnings: Basic Rules Mini-Overview – posted on July 9, 2024

Employers must pay their employees at least once a month or use daily, weekly, bi-weekly or semi-monthly pay periods. Earnings must be paid within 10 days after the end of the pay period in which they were earned. Find out if you are entitled to overtime pay. Overtime is all hours worked over eight hours a day, or 44 hours in a week – whichever is greater. Some professions are exempt and special rules may apply to certain industries.  Employees are typically paid overtime at 1.5x their hourly rate unless there is a written agreement in place that states otherwise.

General Holidays and Holiday Pay Mini-Overview – posted on July 9, 2024

Most employees are entitled to time off with pay or additional pay for general holidays, sometimes called statutory or stat holidays. Alberta has nine general holidays and four additional optional holidays that employers may also choose to recognize as general holidays. Learn about general holiday pay eligibility requirements to receive a day off with pay or 1.5x your wage rate for working on the holiday, and how general holiday pay is calculated.  Exceptions may apply in specific sectors, such as construction, or for farm and ranch workers.
