In fall of 2019, we gathered input from Albertans on employment laws that directly affect them, such as vacation time, general holiday pay and youth employment.

Your feedback guided proposed changes to employment standards rules as we continue our commitment to reduce red tape and get Albertans back to work.

We received more than 5,400 responses to the online survey in November 2019 on the following topics:

  • vacation time
  • general holiday pay
  • youth employment rules
  • hours of work averaging agreements
  • group terminations
  • temporary layoff notices
  • termination pay
  • administrative penalties
  • employee’s statement of earnings
  • variances and exemptions to employment standards rules

Outcomes

Bill 32: the Restoring Balance in Alberta's Workplaces Act was introduced on July 7, 2020 to provide employees and employers with clearer and more flexible rules about averaging agreements, hours of work, rest periods and temporary layoff notices.
