We reviewed the driver medical exam system to find ways to improve access and increase the efficiency of the health care system.

Overview

We reviewed the driver medical exam system to identify which health care providers can complete the exam, ways to improve access and cut red tape.

In Alberta, drivers are required by law to report any medical or physical conditions or changes in health that may affect their ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. There are also regular medical examination requirements for drivers 75 years of age and older and Class 1, 2, and 4 commercial drivers.

Currently, nurse practitioners and physicians can complete driver medical exams. We’re working with health regulatory colleges and primary care networks to identify which health care providers are qualified to conduct driver medical examinations.

Input received

From June 30 to August 7, we met  with health regulatory colleges and primary care networks to understand the delivery implications and concerns associated with allowing other health care providers to complete driver medical examinations and find ways to improve access to these exams.

Next steps

We are currently reviewing input received, which will be used to develop new policies for driver medical examinations.
