Delivering Class 5 driver training

Requirements and training materials for driver training schools delivering Class 5 driver training.

Overview

The Class 5 driver’s licence classroom curriculum educates new drivers on driving skills and the rules of the road.

Licensed driving schools can choose to:

  • use our Class 5 Curriculum, or
  • submit a curriculum to Driver Licensing Programs and Standards (DPLS) for approval

Curriculum

We provide the Class 5 Driver Education Instructor Guide to all driver training schools licensed to deliver the Class 5 classroom curriculum.

To use your own Class 5 classroom curriculum, see the Class 5 curriculum criteria and Definitions of Class 5 Curriculum Components.

You must complete the Classroom Curriculum Outline and Approval Checklist and submit it with your proposed curriculum to DPLS.

You are only permitted to submit a maximum of 3 curriculum outlines for approval.

If we do not approve the third version of the curriculum, you must use the standardized Class 5 Curriculum.

Program materials

You can order the Class 5 Driver Education: A Guide for Students from Alberta King’s Printer.

You must maintain a list of students on the Class 5 Driver Education Student Classroom Record.
