Part of Seniors

Day of Older Persons

On October 1, celebrate the rich and diverse history of Alberta’s most experienced generation: Seniors.

Overview

October 1 has been proclaimed Day of Older Persons in Alberta to:

  • formally recognize and acknowledge older Albertans and their contributions to their communities
  • raise awareness about seniors' interests and concerns
  • address misconceptions about older persons and aging

Alberta is expected to be home to over 1 million seniors in the next 2 decades.

United Nations

The United Nations introduced the International Day of Older Persons in 1990 as a way of bringing awareness and attention to seniors. Since then it has been a catalyst for people coming together to overcome misconceptions against seniors and has ushered in new policies that benefit seniors across the world.
