Cottages

The Government of Alberta manages all the cottages that are allowed within our provincial parks.

Overview

Historically, the Government of Alberta has allowed cottage dispositions on park lands. However, no new cottage lots are permitted on Crown land.

We work with cottage disposition holders to encourage practices that align with the park’s conservation and recreation values.

Existing cottage dispositions can be:

  • amended
  • assigned
  • cancelled
  • renewed

To learn more, refer to the Provincial Parks (Dispositions) Regulation or contact us.

Amendments

A cottage lot disposition can be amended to add a new lessee or remove an existing lessee. An example of this is when there is an estate change.

An amendment does not change the term of the cottage disposition.

Submit an application

Submit your amendment application to [email protected].

We approve each amendment in writing before the change takes effect.

Assignments

The process involved for transferring the cottage disposition from one lessee to another, as in the case of the sale of a cottage, is called an 'assignment.’

Prior to the consideration of a sale, the cottage holders should contact us to ensure we can proceed with the assignment.

A cottage assignment is for the interest in the cottage – and not the land the cottage is on.

Submit an application

Submit your application for assignment to [email protected].

We approve each assignment in writing before the cottage changes hands.

Development approval

A development approval is applied for when the disposition holder wants to make changes on their cottage lot. An example of this is adding a storage shed.

Prior to development, cottage holders should contact us for more information.

Submit an application

Submit your request for development approval to [email protected].

We approve each development approval in writing before any work commences.

Renewals

A renewal extends the term of the cottage disposition.

Submit an application

Submit your application for the renewal of your cottage to [email protected].

We approve each renewal – for a term of 25 years – in writing.
