Overview
Alberta’s government is committed to enhance clarity, foster partnerships, and accelerate progress to position Alberta as a global leader in artificial-intelligence-driven data centre operations.
Understanding the process
Establishing an AI data centre in Alberta requires navigating applications, approvals and a comprehensive regulatory process. This involves approvals from other governments and agencies.
Key considerations include:
- applying to and obtaining approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission to develop and operate a power plant
- consultations with Indigenous Peoples and engaging with the Aboriginal Consultation Office
- securing electrical grid and system access from the Alberta Electric System Operator
- applying for and obtaining building and development permits from municipalities
Approvals required are unique to the project’s specifics, such as connections to the natural gas pipeline system, water requirements, or broadband networks. It’s important to note that projects located in certain areas may trigger additional requirements under the Public Lands Act and some projects may require coordination among regulators, depending on factors such as project complexity or potential uncertainty to the environment.
