Become a translator for driver’s knowledge tests

Apply to become a translator for Class 3, 6 and 7 driver’s licence knowledge tests.

Overview

To become a translator for a Class 3, 6, or 7 driver’s knowledge test you must apply to Driver Education and Examination Standards (DEES). Successful applicants will be assigned a Translator Identification Number (TIN).

How to apply

Step 1. Submit application package

Send the following 5 documents as attachments in one email to Driver Education and Examination Standards (DEES) at [email protected]:

  • completed TIN Application Form
  • criminal record check including a vulnerable sector check, provided by a law enforcement agency and dated within 90 days of the date of TIN application
  • signed Code of Conduct
  • proof of language aptitude for each language to be translated (except English)
  • proof of affiliation with an approved translator organization or proof of employment by a registry agency

You are responsible for obtaining and completing these documents and for any associated costs. If any of the required documents are not properly completed or attached, the application will not be processed and you will be advised by email. Documents received via fax, mail, courier or in person will not be accepted or processed.

Step 2. Receive approval letter

You will get an email advising you of the outcome of your application. If successful, you will receive a Translator Identification Number (TIN) as part of the email.

You must ensure that DEES has your current contact information. You can submit changes by email to DEES at: [email protected]

TINs are valid for 2 years. As the expiry date is shown on the Letter of Approval, renewal notices are not issued. It is the responsibility of the TIN holder to provide renewal documents to DEES at [email protected] at least 30 days before the TIN expiry date.

If at any time DEES is advised by your affiliated translator organization, a registry agency, or any law enforcement agency of a change in circumstances which affects your eligibility status, your TIN will be cancelled.

Any application received for a TIN which has been cancelled or expired will be processed as a new application.

How to renew your Translator Identification Number (TIN)

Your Translator Identification Number (TIN) is valid for 2 years. You can find the expiry date on your Letter of Approval.

To renew your TIN, you must follow the steps below and provide all documentation in one email to DEES at [email protected] at least 30 days before your TIN expires.

If you let your TIN expire, it cannot be renewed. You will have to complete a new application package and provide all new application documentation to get another TIN.

Step 1. Submit renewal package

Send the following documents as attachments in one email to DEES at [email protected]:

  • completed TIN Application Form
  • criminal record check including a vulnerable sector check, provided by a law enforcement agency and dated within 90 days of the date of the TIN renewal application
  • signed Code of Conduct
  • proof of affiliation with an approved translator organization or proof of employment by a registry agency
  • proof of language aptitude for each language to be translated (except English) only if changes are requested to language(s) shown on current TIN approval letter

You are responsible for obtaining and completing these documents and for any associated costs. If any of the required documents are not properly completed or attached, the application will not be processed and you will be advised by email. Documents received via fax, mail, courier or in person will not be accepted or processed.

Step 2. Receive renewal approval letter

You will get an email advising you of the outcome of your renewal application. If successful, you will receive a TIN renewal approval letter as part of the email.

If at any time DEES is advised by your affiliated translator organization, a registry agency or any law enforcement agency of a change in circumstances which affects your eligibility status, your TIN will be cancelled.
