On February 16 to 19, Grande Prairie will be hosting the Alberta Winter Games, bringing together 2,500 Alberta youth athletes, coaches and chaperones for a memorable time of athletic competition and friendship.
The Alberta Games is a great opportunity for Alberta’s finest young athletes to compete in a multi-sport environment, which will welcome 2,000 athletes ages 11 to 16, from 8 different zones across the province. It’s a remarkable opportunity for Alberta’s youth to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience that helps them realize anything is possible.
I know the Alberta Games have proven to bolster local economies, with the 2023 Summer Games bringing an economic benefit of nearly $9.5 million for the host Okotoks and Diamond Valley. Alberta’s government provided $1,020,000 operating grant to the Grande Prairie host society to support the 2024 Alberta Winter Games. The grant helped cover operating costs such as staffing, transportation and promotions.
I am grateful to the Grande Prairie community, volunteers and supporters for coordinating all aspects of the games, from securing event venues and athlete accommodations to engaging volunteers and ensuring athletes have a fantastic time at the Games.
The Alberta Winter Games program is proud to have 50 alumni that have participated in the Games and have gone on to represent Canada at the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
To the sport organizations, families, coaches and fans of the athletes, thank you for all your hard work in supporting these athletes and nurturing their passion for sport.
To the athletes competing, embrace every moment during these games.
The memories and lessons you’ll gain during this time will carry over in other areas of your life on and off the field.
Have fun and I wish you all the best of luck in the Games.
