“Alberta’s government recognizes the sacrifices Albertans make while serving in the Canadian Armed Forces, both in active duty and the reserves. Our government is committed to supporting our armed forces reservist members by providing a job-protected leave so they can fulfill their service obligations and keep their civilian jobs, while engaging in expanded duties.

“To support the operations and activities related to the June 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, I have approved a temporary ministerial regulation enabling Alberta-based Canadian Armed Forces reserves to take reservist leave. The regulation takes effect March 31 and expires on August 31.

“I am confident this change will provide more capacity for the Canadian Armed Forces to support the summit’s security and ensure its success.

“Alberta's reservists are uniquely positioned to take on this role, as their deep-rooted commitment to both our province and country, combined with their unparalleled readiness and expertise, make them the ideal force for this special mission.

“Alberta’s government looks forward to hosting G7 leaders in our province and for the chance to showcase Alberta’s limitless opportunity and unparalleled landscapes on the world’s stage.”

Matt Jones, Minister of Jobs, Economy and Trade

“On behalf of Alberta’s reservists, I thank Minister Jones for implementing this temporary regulation.

“This provides our province’s reservists with a rare opportunity to serve during a significant world event that has not been held in Alberta since 2002.

“For many reservists this may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“I encourage their civilian employers to accommodate our Alberta reservists and support their requests for this special leave.”

Justin Wright, MLA for Cypress-Medicine Hat and Government of Alberta Military Liaison
