Alberta’s government is proud to highlight the positive strides made in workers’ compensation, recovery and return to work in light of the 2023 annual report from the Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB). The report underscores the government and WCB’s shared commitment to supporting injured workers so they can get back to work as soon and safely as possible.
Injured workers should not have to worry about financial hardship while they recover. By ensuring the vast majority of claims are processed quickly, Alberta’s workers’ compensation system is helping injured workers when and where they need it most.
“Workers getting back to sustainable and meaningful work after an illness or injury is a top priority for Alberta’s government. WCB’s 2023 annual report highlights the significant progress made in improving the workers’ compensation system, ensuring injured workers receive timely care and supporting their safe return to work. The results of this year's report offer a strong foundation for continued improvements in workers’ compensation."
The report revealed key achievements for WCB, including continued success in delivering timely wage-loss benefits and supporting workers through their recovery process. WCB met its goal of issuing wage-loss benefits to 83 per cent of injured workers within 14 days of claim registration, allowing workers to focus on their recovery.
Further, Alberta exceeded its goal of returning at least 85 per cent of workers to work within four months, including those requiring modified duties. This achievement highlights the effectiveness of early intervention and the importance of providing workers with modified work options, which has been a key focus for the government and WCB. Alberta’s government believes every Albertan should have access to a diverse range of working options, ensuring their job can work for them.
For workers unable to return to their previous jobs, WCB and its partners successfully assisted 85 per cent of them with job placements or re-employment leads, providing vital support during the workers’ transitions.
“These achievements reflect the commitment of both Alberta’s government and WCB-Alberta to creating a system that puts workers first. We are proud to see how our joint efforts have led to faster claim processing, better support for injured workers, and higher levels of satisfaction. Together, we continue to enhance Alberta’s workers' compensation system to ensure it serves the needs of all Albertans."
Through these efforts, 86 per cent of workers who used the WCB’s services reported being satisfied with the timeliness, transparency and respect of their interactions with WCB. These milestones are a testament to the strength and efficiency of Alberta's workers' compensation system and the government’s ongoing commitment to workers and employers alike.
"I would like to thank WCB for the hard effort and dedication. From what I have experienced, WCB goes above and beyond. I have always had top notch communication, always been treated with respect and always been valued. I was given the proper support I needed. I cannot thank WCB enough for everything they have done for me."
Alberta’s government remains committed to maintaining and improving its workers' compensation system, ensuring employers receive affordable no-fault liability insurance and injured workers receive the care and support they need to recover, return to work and remain financially stable.
Alberta’s government is dedicated to ensuring every Albertan returns home safe and healthy at the end of each workday.
