Alberta’s government believes in supporting post-secondary institutions and the communities they serve. That’s why the government is making a significant investment supporting 12 post-secondary institutions in creating 761 new seats in programs dedicated to in-demand mental health professions. Impacted programs include psychiatric nursing, psychology, social work, child and youth care, and addiction counselling.

Supporting the mental health needs of Albertan requires a sustainable, long-term approach that serves communities across the province. This funding will enable institutions to increase program capacities, improve educational offerings and prepare a new generation of mental health professionals to meet the emerging needs of our communities.

“We are committed to ensuring that every Albertan has access to the care they need, where they need it. This investment will bridge gaps in mental health care and give more post-secondary institutions the tools they need to provide critical services and support communities across our province.”

Rajan Sawhney, Minister of Advanced Education

“With a growing need for mental health services, this seat expansion will benefit families across the province. No matter what part of Alberta someone calls home, they deserve access to consistent, high quality mental health care. Our government is proud to be working with post-secondary institutions, making sure services are available to Albertans in need.”

Dan Williams, Minister of Mental Health and Addiction

The new Mental Health Professions Enrollment Expansion grant program is a critical step forward to train and educate more skilled mental health professionals in our province. By expanding educational opportunities, Alberta’s government is ensuring a robust, capable mental health workforce for the future.

“Mount Royal University is pleased to receive this funding for enrolment expansion from the Government of Alberta as it will enable us to add new seats in our high-demand BA in Psychology program. Improving mental health is an immense societal challenge that universities can help solve through graduates who find rewarding and much-needed careers in mental health.”

Dr. Chad London, acting president and vice-chancellor, Mount Royal University

“Today’s enrollment expansion funding announcement will have a net positive effect for individuals and communities alike. Northwestern Polytechnic is grateful for the opportunity to broaden our degree and diploma programming with four new in-demand offerings that will develop knowledgeable, skilled and compassionate graduates where they are needed most.”

Dr. Vanessa Sheane, president and chief executive officer, Northwestern Polytechnic

“St. Mary's University is excited to expand our BA Psychology degree in Calgary next year thanks to the province's increased investment in education. This support also will allow our university to provide every course required for graduates wanting to enter health-focused professions in areas like medicine, mental health and addictions.”

Dr. Sinda Vanderpool, president and vice-chancellor, St. Mary's University

The Mental Health Professions Enrollment Expansion grant program is a key commitment under Budget 2024 and aligns with Advanced Education’s mandate to expand mental health professional training spaces in Alberta’s post-secondary institutions.
