Another world-class sporting event is taking place in Alberta, further cementing the province’s reputation as a premier destination for major sport events and sports fans worldwide. More than 130 of the world’s top youth waterskiers will come to Calgary to compete in the world title competition.
Athletes from more than 20 countries, including the United States, Australia, France and Japan will come to Calgary to compete on the Lakes of Kastynstone, 10 kilometres south of Calgary, at Predator Bay Water Ski Club. The Championships include three disciplines: slalom, in which athletes navigate a course of buoys at high speeds; trick, in which athletes perform a series of acrobatic maneuvers; and jump, in which skiers aim for maximum distance off a ramp.
“We are thrilled to host such an extraordinary gathering of young talent. Alberta is known for its vibrant sport culture, and the Predator Bay Water Ski Club’s world-class facilities and natural scenery make it the perfect location for these world championships.”
Canada will be sending 11 athletes to compete in the Championships, including Albertan Sofia Pelkey. Twelve-year-old Pelkey from Bragg Creek, Alberta is making waves in the waterskiing community, having swept the U17 Girls categories in Slalom, Trick, Jump, and Overall at the Jr. Canadian Open this summer. She is the youngest athlete on the Canadian Team.
The Championships are expected to attract more than 1,500 spectators and inject up to $1 million into the economy of the greater Calgary area, as athletes, officials and spectators support businesses in the region with increased dining, shopping, entertainment and accommodation bookings. Alberta’s government is providing $35,000 for the planning, staging and delivery of the competition.

Since 2007, Predator Bay Water Ski Club has hosted five National Championships, five Pro Tournaments, and the 2009 IWWF Open World Water Ski Championships.
