At approximately 7:44 p.m., an Edmonton Police Service (EPS) officer attended the Shell station located at 9296 - 144 Avenue in Edmonton, to use the washroom. The officer was on duty and in uniform, having earlier been called to a residence in the area.
A man approached as the officer was entering the store and the two had a conversation during which the man presented a stun gun to the officer and then exited the store.
The officer followed the man out of the store and gave directions for the man to stop and get on the ground. The man turned and moved quickly, reaching towards the officer.
Moving backward, the officer drew their pistol and fired multiple rounds at the man. Emergency medical care was provided to the man as soon as the other officers arrived on scene at approximately 7:47 p.m. The man was then transported to hospital for further treatment by emergency medical services.
The prohibited weapon was located on scene, after it was removed from the man upon arrest.
ASIRT’s investigation will examine the use of force by the officer. No additional information will be released.
As part of its ongoing investigation, ASIRT is continuing efforts to identify people who may have witnessed aspects of the confrontation between the man and police. ASIRT is asking anyone who may have been in the area and may have witnessed these events and/or may have video, to contact investigators at 780-644-1483.
ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
