Albertans deserve confidence in their justice system, knowing it has the necessary resources to protect them and their communities. To ensure timely access to justice, Alberta’s government is filling three positions at the Alberta Court of Justice – two in Edmonton and one in the central region.

Alberta’s government created four new judicial positions for the Alberta Court of Justice in 2022 and added three more positions in 2023 for a total of 143 justice positions. Alberta’s government continues to prioritize filling judicial vacancies as they arise.
Judicial appointments
Kanwarinder (Sony) Singh Ahluwalia, KC received a bachelor of laws from the University of Windsor in 1994 and a master of laws from York University, Osgoode Law School in 2019. He worked as a sole practitioner, Crown counsel for British Columbia, and legal counsel for federal government departments before becoming a prosecutor for Alberta Justice, where he has been deputy chief prosecutor since 2021. He has been appointed to the Edmonton Criminal Division, starting May 27, 2024.
Monica Brown received a bachelor of laws from the University of Calgary in 1997. Currently a principal mediator and arbitrator at Brown Resolutions in Red Deer, she specializes in family law. She previously worked at three other Red Deer law firms, where she focused on family law, but also had experience in civil law, real estate law, and wills and estates. She is being appointed to the central region, starting May 24, 2024.
William Hendsbee, KC received a bachelor of laws from the University of Alberta in 1993. He is a partner with Cummings Andrews Mackay LLP in Edmonton, where he has worked since 1996. From 1993 -1996, he worked as an associate and student at Bishop & McKenzie LLP in Edmonton. He was a bencher with the Law Society of Alberta from 2018-2024, serving as president during the 2023-24 term. He has been appointed to the Edmonton region, starting July 2, 2024.
Quick facts
- Lawyers with at least 10 years at the bar can apply to become a justice with the Alberta Court of Justice.
- Applications are first considered by the Alberta Judicial Council, which makes recommendations to the Alberta Judicial Nominating Committee.
- The committee makes recommendations to the minister of justice, who then makes recommendations to cabinet.
