New passing lanes are being constructed on Highway 40 about 38 kilometres south of Grande Prairie, between Bald Mountain Creek and Hammerhead Road. Construction includes several intersection improvements, shoulder-widening and pavement overlay.

Motorists can expect periodic lane closures during paving operations. Speed limits will be reduced to 80 kilometres per hour in most work zones, and to 50 kilometres per hour in areas where passing lanes and intersection upgrades are being constructed.

The Highway 40 construction work and related traffic impacts are expected to continue periodically until fall of 2020.

Motorists should allow extra time for travel, obey all traffic signs and signals and watch for highway workers on the road.

Additional information

  • More than 5,000 vehicles per day travel Highway 40 between Grande Prairie and Canfor Road.
  • Large trucks make up much of the traffic because of industrial businesses in the area.

Flaggers will occasionally stop traffic within the work zones to allow trucks to cross.
