Work on Highway 60 improvements to begin

The Government of Alberta is twinning the highway between highways 16 and 16A, constructing an overpass over the CN rail tracks, and realigning the interchange over highway 16A to accommodate twinning.

Design work and relocation of utilities is set to begin later this year.

“Highway 60 is an important economic corridor in the region. Improvements to this vital route will help industry move oversize and overweight loads to the north and northwest corners of the province and support economic growth in the Edmonton region.”

The highway 60 project is part of the $1.6 billion funding strategy to upgrade the High Load Corridor across Alberta.

“Twinning highway 60 between highways 16 and 16A will mean a safer, smoother drive for thousands of motorists who use that stretch of highway each day. These and other changes will save time, support economic development and help everyone get to their destination safely.”

A new overpass will be built to separate the Canadian National Railway tracks from Highway 60 so that northbound and southbound traffic will not need to pass railway tracks or be delayed by passing trains.

The Highway 60 improvement project is expected to support about 450 direct and indirect jobs during construction. Construction should take two to three years.

• Highway 60 has become a major corridor for the movement of goods and services through the area and connects to a number of industrial business parks.
• The interchange at highways 60 and 16A will be realigned to accommodate four lanes of traffic.
• Highway 60 is also a new component of the High Load Corridor that supports the movement of oversize and overweight vehicles and connects them to the provincial highway network.
• Daily traffic volume is roughly 15,000 vehicles per day and truck traffic makes up 25 per cent of that volume.
• There are upwards of 50 train crossings per day on the CN mainline.
