National Child Day: Minister Larivee

Premier Notley and Minister Larivee meet with Great Kids Award recipients during a National Child Day event at the Alberta legislature.

“Our government believes that all young people should be heard everywhere and every day on issues and decisions that matter to them.

“Today, we celebrate National Child Day and children’s right to identity, a right that includes respect for diversity and inclusion. Every child in our province deserves a happy and healthy life, no matter where they are born or where they live – no matter their personal, social or cultural identity.

“Our government is working to help kids reach their full potential by ensuring they have a voice and are supported. Every parent knows that laying the foundation for childhood success doesn’t begin in Grade 1. That’s why we’re improving access to quality, affordable $25-a-day child care. It’s why the Alberta Child Benefit supports access to dance, soccer or music lessons. Because helping parents means helping children have brighter futures.

“A key step in A Stronger, Safer Tomorrow, our plan to protect children and improve supports for Indigenous families, is to   establish a Youth Advisory Committee for children involved in the child intervention system, so we can hear from young people directly. Our government is also ensuring school environments respect diversity and foster a sense of belonging, including the ability for students to form gay-straight alliances.

“Today, I was honoured to meet with Great Kids Award winners, who showed once again just how bright the future of our province will be. Alberta is filled with great kids like these whose voices and ideas are building stronger communities throughout our province. This year’s nomination deadline for the Great Kids Awards has been extended to Jan. 31. I encourage all Albertans to nominate great kids they know for this award and to celebrate all kids.”
